Many species are harmless or even beneficial as they break down organic matter. However, several species can affect the health of people and animals, including honey bees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Animals with mite infestations may be intensely itchy. Mites can transmit pathogens or cause hair loss, papules or nodules, thickened skin, or secondary skin infections.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clinical signs depend on whether the species burrows into the skin, remains on the skin surface, or inhabits hair follicles or sebaceous glands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foreign vectors and foreign animal diseases (FADs) are not found in the United States and can threaten human and animal health. FADs can be introduced to the United States, so animal owners and veterinary personnel have a key role in recognizing and reporting FADs to animal and public health officials. Early signs of mite-related FADs may include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unusual mite appearance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Large number of sick or dead animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unusual signs of illness (like severe skin lesions or neurological disease)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"about\" class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ea8149a4 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-palette-color-6-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a498935b62159176d338deeae30dad93\">About Mites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mites are arachnids, relatives of spiders and ticks. They may be free-living or parasitic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mites live most of their life on an animal but can live days to weeks off a host.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some species are restricted to one type of animal host (high host specificity). However, many can be identified by a unique set of characteristics with the help of a dissecting microscope.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The body shape varies from oval to round to elongated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Legs may be short or long and distinct.
