Mosquitoes are an important food source for many animals. Some mosquitoes can also be beneficial as pollinators. However, some mosquitoes can transmit pathogens to people and animals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mosquito-borne diseases affect millions of people and animals each year throughout the world. Signs of mosquito-borne disease commonly include fever, lethargy, muscle aches, and headaches. Severe illness can lead to neurological damage, including encephalitis and death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foreign animal diseases (FADs) are not found in the United States and can threaten human and animal health. FADs can be introduced to the United States, so animal owners and veterinary personnel have a key role in recognizing and reporting FADs to animal and public health officials. Early signs of mosquito-related FADs may include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unusual mosquito appearance, abundance, or distribution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span>Large number of sick or dead animals<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unusual signs of illness (like abortion storms or neurologic disease)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"about\" class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-3e5a5161 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-palette-color-6-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b4ae97adfc7eede6d07aac6a253cbbd6\">About Mosquitoes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mosquito species differ by where they lay eggs, what animals they feed upon, when they are active, and how far they can fly. Some mosquitoes don\u2019t fly far, while others can fly several miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The mosquito life cycle has four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eggs are laid in or near water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Larvae (wigglers) and pupae (tumblers) live in the water and feed on organic matter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adults live on land and feed on nectar from plants or blood from animal hosts (typically birds and mammals).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All mosquitoes require standing water to complete their development.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some species lay single eggs on damp soil (that is later flooded by water) while others lay an egg raft (containing up to hundreds of eggs) on the water\u2019s surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some species lay eggs in larger water sources, like ponds and swamps. Other species may use small containers that collect water, such as a discarded tire or bottle cap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most eggs hatch within 48 hours, but some can remain dormant for years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mosquitoes typically live for two to three weeks. class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many mosquito species can be identified by a unique set of characteristics visible to the naked eye or with the help of a dissecting microscope.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some mosquitoes, especially closely-related species, may be difficult or impossible to identify without the help of a trained entomologist or molecular testing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adult mosquitoes are slender, long-legged insects with one pair of wings, scales on wings, and long mouthparts (proboscis) used for sucking blood or nectar.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Antennae in males are bushier than in females.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Palps (sensory organs near the proboscis) may be long or short, depending on the species.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coloration of hairs on the body, wings, and legs varies by species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identification of mosquito larvae and pupae uses different
