This textbook provides veterinary students and veterinarians in the US with an overview of transboundary and emerging animal diseases, their routes of introduction and spread, and the role of state, national, and international agencies in controlling these diseases. It is also meant to serve as a ready resource for information on important diseases that do not exist in North America or that are rare. The 34 disease fact sheets in Section 2 and the 260 annotated images for 59 diseases in Section 3 provide important information to enable veterinarians to become familiar with these diseases. More than 115 additional factsheets can be found at www.cfsph.iastate.edu
The textbook is based on the Emerging and Exotic Diseases of Animals – Initial Accreditation Training course currently used by US Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. The course is required as part of the USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program’s initial accreditation training. The USDA provides support for the course and distribution of the textbook to veterinary students through a cooperative agreement with Iowa State University.
