07.24.04 : Train-the-Trainer in Philadelphia

The Center for Food Security and Public Health hosted a session entitled Emerging Threats and Biological Risk Management Awareness Education: Train the Trainer Program for Veterinarians in conjunction with Annual Meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Approximately 60 veterinarians attended and received tools to educate their peers and clients about emerging disease threats and managing biological risk on farms and in veterinary clinics. Keynote speakers included Dr. Tom McGinn, Department of Homeland Security who spoke about the importance of veterinarians in prevention strategies for emerging and exotic diseases and Dr. John Fischer, Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study, University of Georgia who spoke about biological risk management for the interface of wildlife, domestic animals and humans.

Attendees learned about the need for biological risk management and disease prevention to protect veterinarians, livestock owners, and animal owners from the accidental or intentional introduction of various agents and diseases. They also received PowerPoint presentations, fact sheets and other materials to educate veterinarians, food animal producers, human medical professionals, and the general public about bioterrorism, agroterrorism and biological risk management. All partici-pants are expected to give six presentations on the above topics in the coming year.
