Infection Control

For Producers

Increasing biological risk management (BRM)/biosecurity on the farm is the most important thing an animal producer can do to protect his/her animals from endemic diseases, foreign animal diseases and agroterrorism, and to protect the public from zoonotic diseases. The USDA Risk Management Agency provided funding for the CFSPH to develop materials to increase awareness of the ways diseases can enter and spread within beef or dairy facilities. These educational materials were delivered to 87 Extension Specialists from 41 states in a national Train the Trainer session in July 2006 in conjunction with the American Society of Animal Science/American Dairy Science Association’s Annual Meeting. The extension specialists used the tools to train other educators in their state and to work directly with producers to enhance BRM. These tools include handouts, fact sheets, signs, and information on how to protect your facility if a foreign animal disease is diagnosed in the U.S.

For Veterinarians

Improved infection/disease control in animal production facilities and in veterinary clinics is increasingly recognized as the new standard of care. This not only prevents the spread of endemic diseases, but zoonotic and foreign animal diseases as well. The CFSPH has designed an on-line resource that focuses on routes of disease transmission and provides practical disease management strategies for use in beef, dairy or equine operations or in the veterinary clinic. Veterinarians create a biological risk management assessment question set, based on the type of farm/clinic being evaluated, and conduct a walk through assessment. Next they enter the results into the on-line database, and a report on the most vulnerable routes of disease transmission is generated, along with recommendations to enhance biological risk management. The veterinarian then works with the producer or clinic staff to prioritize and implement the recommendations.
