The Veterinary Biologics Training Program has been offered every year since 1996. Almost 1800 individuals, including more than 500 attendees from 84 countries, have attended the program. The course gives participants an overview of the scientific principles of vaccines and vaccination and of the USDA regulatory process for assuring the purity, safety, potency and efficacy of veterinary biologics.

This course is sponsored by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB) and the Iowa State University (ISU) College of Veterinary Medicine.

Program Topics

Block 1: Basic Immunology and Principles of Vaccination, taught by James A. Roth, DVM, PhD, DACVM, an award winning instructor. The material offered in Block 1 of the Veterinary Biologics Program is also available through an online course. Individuals and groups can take this course at their own pace without travel expense and time away from the office. Click here to preview the online lectures and to register for the online course.

Block 2: Procedures for Ensuring Vaccine Safety and Efficacy, taught by regulatory officials from the USDA APHIS VS Center for Veterinary Biologics. This block covers the requirements and processes for licensing/registration and testing of veterinary biological products and reviews the inspection and compliance process for production, release and post-marketing surveillance of veterinary biological products covered under the Virus-Serum-Toxin Act.

The cost of registration does not include the costs for housing and meals in Ames.

Transportation

You should make arrangements for round trip flights from home to the Des Moines (Iowa) International Airport. IICAB will provide transportation to and from the Des Moines Airport to Ames and between the motel and the course location. If you would like us to provide transportation from the Des Moines Airport to Ames, please send us a copy of your flight itinerary by May 9, 2013. If you plan to rent a car, also let us know that. International participants attending the entire course should plan to arrive in Ames on Sunday, May 12th in order to be rested and ready for the start of the Program on Tuesday May 14, 2013.

Lodging

We will make your lodging arrangements. We have been able to arrange for motel rooms at the cost of $70.00 USD per night for a single room. Motel charges should be paid directly to IICAB at the beginning of the program. The host hotel is the Grandstay Hotel, 1606 S. Kellogg, Ames, Iowa, 50010. (Ph: 515 232 8363). The Grandstay Hotel offers free warm breakfast, kitchen areas in each room, indoor pool and guest laundry area. In addition the Grandstay Hotel is accessible to restaurants, shopping, and public transportation for travel within Ames.

Meals

We estimate meal and incidental expenses at $40 per day. Most lunches are provided by IICAB during the Training Program.
