Jesse M. Hostetter, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Dr. Hostetter received his DVM from Iowa State University in 1991, and practiced in small animal medicine for 5 years following graduation. He returned to Iowa State University for a combined PhD/Residency program in veterinary pathology. He finished his PhD in 2000 and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (Anatomic Pathology) in 2001. Following his pathology training Dr. Hostetter joined the Department of Veterinary Pathology at Iowa State University, where he is currently an Assistant Professor. He is one of 6 diagnostic pathologists in the department. In addition, he has an active research program which trains veterinary pathology and immunobiology graduate students. His research interest is in the innate immune responses to intracellular pathogens. His current research involves antigen presenting cell function during Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map) infection.

Dr. Minion received his BS in Chemistry (1972), his MS in Cell Biology (1977) from the University of Memphis, and his PhD in Microbiology from the University of Alabama in Birmingham (1983). He spent three years at the University of Tennessee for the health Sciences in Memphis as Post Doctorial fellow in the laboratory of Jon Goguen where he studied Yersinia pestis genetics. Dr. Minion arrived at Iowa State in 1986 as an Assistant Professor in the Veterinary Medical Research Institute and is now a professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine. His research has focused in bacterial pathogenesis, primarily on mycoplasma diseases of animals (Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae) and more recently on food safety pathogens (Escherichia coli O157:H7) and the potential bioterriorism agent (Yersinia pestis). His research has ranged from the basic (regulation of virulence genes) to the applied (vaccine development). He teaches bacterial genetics and bacterial pathogenesis.


Alex Ramirez, DVM, MPH, DACVPM

Dr. Ramirez obtained a BS in Animal Science in 1989 and his DVM degree in 1993, both from Iowa State University. He practiced for 10 years in a predominantly large animal clinic in Cherokee, Iowa. He received his MPH from the University of Iowa in 2004 though the Center for Food Security and Public Health's MPH program. Dr. Ramirez is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico. He ia an Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine at Iowa State University where he specializes in public health, zoonosis, and swine production. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Veterinary Microbiology with an emphasis in Preventive Medicine.
